What
is testing?
In order for you to earn your next rank, a
certified Han Kook Moo Yae examiner in front of
witnesses must determine your progress in skills
and knowledge. At the exam, all of the past
hours of intense effort, training, and
perseverance are rolled up into one
demonstration of what you have accomplished so
far. In addition, the promotional exam process
builds self-confidence through expressing
oneself with maximum effort. Exam preparation
also teaches you to set and reach goals, a
valuable skill in your everyday life.
Who
can test?
Testing eligibility is based on several
criteria. The first criterion is based on your
class attendance. For each belt level, there is
a minimum number of practice hours/classes (see
above table) you must complete before you are
eligible to test. Without completing this
requirement, you will not be prepared or
eligible to test for your next rank. Please ask
the Han Kook Moo Yae Staff Members about your
attendance, and they can help you plan for the
upcoming tests. The second criterion is based on
your technique level. Individuals have their own
pace at which they are able to learn and absorb
techniques. If you aren’t confident that your
level techniques are up to testing standards,
ask your instructor. Your instructors can help
you plan our practice hours/class times to that
you can be prepared for testing.
What if I don’t have enough practice
hours/classes?
If you don’t think you will be able to meet the
class requirements, there are many ways to
obtain the practice you need to in order to test
successfully. The most basic answer is to
“practice more!” If you come to the dojang and
workout before or after your class, you can get
practice/class credit for that time. For more
details on workout length requirements and how
to receiver your class credit, please stop by
the office. Another option to accelerate your
test preparation is Private Lessons. Private
Lessons are 30 minutes for adults and children,
and can accommodate up to 2 students. Because of
the intensified instruction contact of Private
Lessons they are equivalent to 2 classes per
lesson. Please stop by the office for more
information on Private Lessons.
What
if I cannot take the first test or cannot meet
the testing requirements?
If for some reason your schedule
makes it impossible to attend, or if impossible
to make the test requirements by normal test,
then there are make-up test. These can give you
the extra week that you need. The make-up test
are on the Thursday following the regular test.
Please remember to turn in your testing paper
before the final due date to ensure that you are
eligible to test for the make-up test. Please
write on your testing paper which make-up test
you are planning to attend.
What
are we testing on?
The most basic answer to this question is the
you are tested on what you have learned in
class. When you test, judges are looking for
specific things based on your belt level. The
judges are looking to see what you have learned
in class. Have you learned your curriculum
properly? How are you applying what your have
learned in class to your other techniques? This
means that for each new technique you learn,
your should also be applying previous knowledge
to your current techniques. For beginners,
judges look at your punching, power, balance,
stance, and curriculum knowledge. For
intermediate belts, they look for the same
things as a beginners, as well as technique
accuracy. For advanced students, they want to
see the beauty in your techniques, while
maintaining your punch, power, balance and
stance.
What
is double testing?
Double testing is available to
everyone, but with different criteria, We do
not recommend this for everyone. If you are
interested, the first step is to ask your
instructors if they feel it would be beneficial
for you to double test. Practice hours/class
requirements are double the normal amount unless
you have previous martial arts experience. If
you have previous martial arts experience,
please let your instructor know so that they can
determine your current Han Kook Moo Yae
technique level and plan your testing
accordingly.
What
happens after the test?
If
you pass your exam, then your test Result will
be available at the Do-Jang
the Wednesday after our test.
If for some reason you do
not pass part of the exam, don’t worry! You will
be notified the following Wednesday of your
Re-Exam date. Re-Exams are usually
the Thursday following normal testing, during
which time you can re-test on whatever portion
of the exam you failed.
Following each test we have
a belt ceremony, which is usually held 6:00Pm on
Friday following normal testing. This will
differed there is a special event, in which case
everyone will be notified in events. The belt
ceremony is a celebration of your achievement in
Taekwondo. This is when your hard work
recognized by your friends and peers, so please
give the office written notice of your absence.
We thank you for your diligence in this matter
as it helps the belt ceremonies to run quickly
and smoothly, making a great celebration of your
achievement!
